Groundwater flooding in East Kent

Rising groundwater levels may lead to flooding. Flooding is possible to low lying land, roads and properties with basements around the following areas: Petham Bourne, Alkham bourne and Nailbourne including Alkham, Temple Ewell, Elham, Barham, Bishopsbourne, Bridge, Patrixbourne and Bekesbourne. Groundwater levels in East Kent have been rising following significant rainfall during January and early February. As a result of the substantial rainfall during this period, the Nailbourne continues to flow along its full course. By late February, conditions have become noticeably drier, and in some locations, groundwater levels are beginning to stabilise. We are closely monitoring the situation and we are operating the Littlebourne Relief Channel. Keep up to date with groundwater levels on the 'Check for Flooding' site on gov.uk . Riparian owners are reminded to keep rivers on their land clear. This message will be updated by 4:00PM on 20 March 2026 or as the situation changes.
